First generation (GY/EY/RW;2006)
This car resulted from an agreement made between Suzuki and Fiat back in 2003. It was internationally introduced at the 76th Geneva Motor Show in March 2006. SX4 replaces the Aerio (Liana in some markets). SX4 was originally intended solely for Europe, but it sold in most of Suzuki's international markets. It was available with petrol engines ranging from 1.0L to 2.0L. This car was manufactured based on the Suzuki Swift. Units produced in Hungary were sold at a shared percentage between Suzuki and Fiat, and Sedici. SX4 was released as a five-door hatchback body style, which featured a spacious boot. It also featured split-fold rear seats, which have a tumble/roll configuration that allows a flat load area.
Engine variants of this unit included a 1.5L gasoline version identical to the one used in the Swift, as well as a 1.6L gasoline engine with VVT, achieving a maximum output of 101hp. In 2007, the North American market model arrived for the 2007 model year. This vehicle used a timing chain instead of the timing belt and was available with only a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 2007, SuzukiAuto posted the best year-end close in company history, with an incremental sales of the SX4. In 2008, the USA base model was a five-door hatchback that was marketed as the SX4 Crossover. It featured an intelligent All Wheel Drive (iAWD), a CD player aiding MP3, power door locks, power windows, and a keyless entry. It came with anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control, fog lights, and an advanced key in the touring package. Suzuki sold nearly 75,000 Suzuki SX4s and Fiat Sedicis in Europe, making it the second best-selling car in Hungary after the Suzuki Swift.
In 2009, a new Sedan model of SX4 came with a GPS navigation system, Bluetooth, weather, and gas station locator. It was in this same year that FWD and all-wheel drive versions of the SX4 were available as hatchback and sedan, and they were also fully imported from Japan.

The vehicle evolved every year, featuring more advanced technology in both the engine and body styles. In 2010, the engine variants were a 1.6L DOHC VVT engine, a 2.0L DOHC VT J20B engine, and a 2.0L DDiS diesel engine. The USA market cars received a new 2.0L engine (J20B) with an increased output from 143 to 150 PS and featuring a lower fuel consumption. The car is available in either a 6-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. Until 2014, the car received upgrades once more and had different variations of the engines. The face of the vehicle changed, featuring a new chrome grille and foglights. The interior and boot of the car were improved. 2014 marked the last model for this generation in most other markets except for China.
Second generation (JY;2013)
Suzuki unveiled the S-Cross concept at the Paris Motor Show in 2012 as a version of a subcompact crossover as an introduction for the upcoming production model. At that time, Suzuki announced that the S-Cross would be introduced as a new model, rather than a replacement for the SX4, whose production was to continue. In 2013, the all-new design of the SX4 S-Cross was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

It features traction control, paddle shifters, cruise controls, multifunctional steering controls, and an anti-lock braking system. The 1.0L is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, even though there is also a 5-speed automatic transmission.
